Wallace vs. Jaffree
Background Information
In a school in Mobile, Alabama, Jaffree's three kids attended a class where they would have a moment of silence everyday to pray, meditate or reflect. Jaffree did not think that this was a constitutional act and that it violated the 1st amendment, Freedom of Religon. He took his opinion to the supreme court.
Decision
The court, with a 6 to 3 ruling, decided that this act in Alabama was unconstitutional and it went against the 1st amendment.
Lasting Effect
This has had in effect on how further cases judge 1st amendment in school situations, but we have seen quite a few more cases involving religion in schools. It did act as an example but, more people continue to bring these cases to court.
Other Facts
They applied a secular purpose test.
